Description: The map is one of four printed on a composite sheet. The other maps show Cagliari, Rhodes harbour and Famagusta in Cyprus. Map consists of a bird’s-eye view of the main harbour of Malta. In 1572 the first volume of Civitates orbis terrarium was published in Germany (The cities of countries of the world), the magnum opus of George Braun (1541-1622), a cleric in Cologne, and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) who studied the art of engraving in Belgium. Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600) played a vital part as an artist in the overall design of the series which eventually became a six volume town book running from 1572 to 1617. This great city atlas, edited by Georg Braun and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg, eventually contained 546 prospects, bird-eye views and map views of cities from all over the world.
